  15. <p>     DIED. Lucy S. Dawidowicz, 75, chronicler and scholar of
  16. Jewish life and history; in New York City. Born and educated in
  17. New York, Dawidowicz traveled to Poland in the late 1930s, where
  18. she observed the escalating horror of Euorpean anti-Semitism. She
  19. recorded these experiences in From That Place and Time, a memoir
  20. published last year. Her writings on the Holocaust, including The
  21. War Against the Jews, 1933-1945 and The Holocaust and the
  22. Historians, pitted her against such commentators as Hannah Arendt
  23. and Bruno Bettelheim, who argued that the Jews could have done
  24. more to save themselves from the Nazis.</p>
